Making Music with GarageBand

Using GarageBand to create music

Students will use GarageBand, an application in our iBooks, to create music.

Students will demonstrate:
  • familiarity with the software program
  • ability to create two tracks (minimum)
  • ability to save their work appropriately
  • ability to move the work into an mp3 format
  • ability to use their music to enhance their other digital creations
The process of this project moves through the following steps:

Part 1
  1. Using Appleworks Paint, students will create simple shape and color patterns as "rhythm sentences", and then perform them.
  2. Opening GarageBand, students will become familiar with the software's interface and tools: The menu bar across the top of the screen, the shortcut bar across the bottom, and the small commands in each track line.
  3. Using GarageBand, students will create a new work, using the Midi Drum Kit instruments to create sound patterns. Students will use the qwerty keyboard to explore the many sounds available in the Drum Kit, exploring pattern and how to use the functions available in Garage Band.
Part 2
Creating "Software" and "Real" instruments
Part 3
Using the loops library
Part 4
Cutting and editing tracks
Part 5
Sharing to iTunes and exporting as MP3 files
